Over the years aftermarket petcock rebuild kits have received bad press
for not lasting as long as the OEMs. Here are a few tips we have learned over time that will surely help you:
- Make absolutely certain all the metal "factory" pieces you re-use are free of burrs. All little nicks and raised areas need to be filed smooth.
- DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!! This is perhaps the biggest sin against the petcocks. Have a little leak? Most people will tighten the bejeepers out of the screws and make it worse. Not only does the leak not go away, but it distorts the pieces mentioned in number one above. When that happens even a new rebuild kit will not work until you have things flat and smooth again.
- Stretch the new spring just a little.
- Clean every thing well, take your time.
This is a very good item for the "just in case" list of spare parts.
These kits are not returnable once opened.
